Professor Akira Miyawaki of Yokohama National University is a botanist and expert in plant ecology and is Japan's "tree guru". He is an advocate of planting a mixture of trees native to an area to create a dense "authentic" forest. The method of planting pot grown seedlings of a mixture of species densely and at random is known as the Miyawaki method. This results in a forest of tall, medium and low height trees, rooted deeply and firmly in the soil to prevent erosion and supporting a wide diversity of plant and animal life.

Professor Miyawaki has worked all round the world planting millions of trees to restore and create authentic forests including tropical forests and mediterranean ecosystems. He is also involved in a project to create a Green Tide Embankment along the coast of Sendai which was devastated by the tsunami in 2011. This results from an assessment of the trees that had remained standing after the tsunami. See the links below for more information about the Miyawaki method and the work of Professor Akira Miyawaki.
